Galveston - Recovering from Hurricane Ike
In the early morning hours of September 13, 2008 Hurricane Ike made landfall
causing massive devastation all along the Texas gulf coast. The City of
Galveston and Galveston Island were declared uninhabitable for weeks after the
storm. Ike left millions of people without basic services (water and
electricity) for weeks. The total financial losses related to Ike are estimated
as high as $20 billion.
On Galveston Island and
Bolivar Peninsula, the damage to families and their homes was extensive. In the
city of Galveston, over 80% of all homes were damaged and the vast majority of
those had flooding from the storm surge. Even for those
with insurance, the financial burdens associated with additional living
expenses prevented many from returning to their own homes.
Thousands were unable to work for weeks because of restricted access to the
island, and many lost their jobs permanently because of the losses sustained by
their employers.
Although families are
recovering what they can from insurance and FEMA assistance, there is a large
gap of uncovered losses along with a shortage of affordable contractors. drops
of grace is currently planning partnerships with other hurricane relief organizations to bring assistance to those in need in Galveston to restore these families to their homes.
drops of grace is arranging short
mission trips to Galveston to conduct basic repairs including cleanup,
deconstruction, drywall, painting and other related activities. Teams of 8 -10
members will typically arrive at a client home on Friday morning and complete
their work by Sunday Morning.
These trips provide an
excellent opportunity to develop a relationship with a client family and share
God's love. They provide a valuable service to families that have a need, and
are an excellent way to begin building a team for a longer term, national or
international mission.
